Živogošće - history
Živogošće was inhabited since Illyrian and Roman times as evidenced by the Illyrian tombs on top of the hill Suzina.
Also noteworthy is Licinian´s epigram from 474 bc, which consists of 16 Latin hexameters, and is carved into the rocks Pokrivenice on the coast and celebrating fresh water which is still rising here. The first mentions about Živogošće are from the mid-13th century. In 1616 there was founded a Franciscan monastery, which for several centuries became a center of spiritual life and literacy in the region with a rich library and art.
